Directions to ServiceAlice Anne Lyddon Nellestein passed away January 31, 2021 in Salt Lake City, UT. She was born on March 30, 1935 in Des Moines, IA to Harry and Alice Lyddon. Alice graduated from High School in Crookston, MN and from Hamline University in St. Paul, MN with a BA degree in education. She went on to earn a Masters Degree from the University of Utah in Physical Education and Counseling.
Alice taught physical education and business for 5 years at St. Mary’s of the Wasatch High School and College in Salt Lake City and then taught and coached at Granite High School for 35 years where her students began calling her “Nellie” which became a term of endearment for the rest of her life. When she retired in 1993, they calculated she had taught 19,886 students.
The students she worked with all those years meant the world to her. To this day, her students comment about what a good teacher she was. Alice received many awards in the education field and accolades from many educational personnel. She was awarded Teacher of the Year at Granite and a prestigious award from the State of Utah upon her retirement.
Aside from teaching, her greatest loves were camping, fishing, traveling, sports and her dogs – owning up to four at a time. She could out-fish most everyone and took great pride in the 34-pound salmon and 78-pound halibut that she caught during several fishing trips to Alaska. She loved Utah football, basketball and women’s gymnastics. Alice had a great sense of humor and had a story or joke for every occasion.
She is survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Dr. James and Deborah Lyddon of Plymouth, MI and her three nieces Erin, Jenna and Dr. Susannah Lyddon, as well as many cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents and other family members.
Funeral services will be held at Larkin Mortuary, 260 East South Temple, Salt Lake City, UT on Wednesday, February 10, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. A visitation will be held on Tuesday evening from 6-8 p.m. and one hour prior to the service. Guestbook/Condolences
i am Hilda Fabiny daughter and Nellie was my teacher at Granite. Rest in peace. Janis
I was one of Alice’s first students at St. Mary’s and will always remember “Mrs. N” as we called her. Several years later I got to know her while working in a doctors office. She was a wonderful teacher and friend. She will be missed.
Nellie was a huge part of my youth. Teacher, coach, counselor. I loved her and will always remember her as one of my favorite people on earth. My condolences to her family and close friends.
Alice stored her 5th wheel in our facility for several years in Hyrum, Utah. My husband John called her and friends his " golden girls". He loved to hear their adventuers. He passed away 2 1/2 yrs ago. So sorry for your lost. Alice was a wonderful person.

Please accept my sincere condolences. She was a great neighbor to my mother, Josie.
May your wonderful shared memories help to ease your pain.
Dear Nellie I have missed you so much. I worked at Granite High with her for 20 years I loved her funny ness and the things we used to do. We had lunch many times and sold basketball and football tickets together. She was a wonderful lady and I have missed her thes past years. May she rest in peace.
Alice Nellestein was an outstanding teacher and person. I am privileged and proud to list her as a
colleague for 26 of her 35 years at Granite High School. The distinguished service she provided
for her students gives credit to the history of this high school in Salt Lake City.
Nellie was a very great coach and teacher. I had the privilege of being a student and athlete of Nellie's for two great years at Granite High School. Nellie was a very special person, she was like a second Mom to me, and I'm sure many other students who were lucky enough to have been taught by her. I always think back on her always saying there isn't an "I" in team, and there isn't such a word as "can't". She taught us to never give up and to keep on fighting and working hard towards our goals. Nellie always presented us with a flower when we went to State, and always made her cute cards with her "Nellie character" as her signature for every game. Nellie was our Coach and Cheerleader. I'll never forget when a bunch of us volleyball girls changed the Granite High Marquee one night, it was our prank of the season. The next morning it was mentioned over the PA system at school, and everyone was wondering who had done that, but none of us girls gave each other up (we were a team). However, Nellie knew who it was and kept that close to her heart. I remember her mentioning it at practice, and that was all that was said.
My sincere condolences go out to her family.
I’m so sorry to here of the passing of Nellie.. she was a great lady. She taught me many life lessons. She was the couch I wanted to be. We had fun skiing with the school. She had a great sense of humor. She was a great friend, couch and teacher.
